Central Air Diagnosis & Repair

Having your air conditioner shut down in the middle of a July heat wave isn’t just an inconvenience: Inadequate cooling can affect your family’s health. If a system failure happens, you’ll need someone to come in and get you up and running again. That’s exactly what we do here at Hurley & David, where we pledge to get it fixed right or it’s free.

Common Central Air Problems

Because air conditioners are fairly complex machines, there are a number of things that can potentially go wrong. That said, in our time in the HVAC industry we’ve seen that most issues come from just two or three underlying causes. Perhaps the most common is a dirty air filter, which can restrict the flow of air through your system and cause extra dust and debris to accumulate on the coils. Heading off those issues is as simple as cleaning or changing the filter every one to three months, depending on the filter type.

A somewhat more serious issue is electrical control failure. Your air conditioner’s electrical connections and contacts can wear out over time, especially if the system cycles on and off too often. Frequent cycling often comes with over-sized systems, so this is one problem that proper sizing can help you avoid. Regardless, you should have all electrical connections checked by a professional during a routine maintenance visit to ensure that there is no rust, corrosion or other wear and tear.

Finally, many air conditioning problems can be caused by a low refrigerant level. Because your air conditioner doesn’t actually use up any refrigerant during normal operation, low refrigerant either means that your system was undercharged when it was first installed or that you have a leak. Refrigerant leaks are serious issues that need to be professionally fixed right away; a contractor will fix the leak, test the repaired lines and charge the system with the correct amount of refrigerant.
